1.       Design (using the NPT web portal to create your questionnaires)

2.       Engage (using the NPT Survey software to capture patient feedback)

3.       Report (using the NPT web portal to report on your instant real-time data)

We’re also looking to upload screencasts of certain NPT processes and functionality. So keep watching the news pages for updates.

Thu, 25 Feb 2010 03:11:00 -0800 Priority Research, the famous Fabio the Frog™ and Alder Hey Children's Hospital steal the show at the HSC convention at the Church House Conference Centre in London. http://news.nptoolkit.com/priority-research-the-famous-fabio-the-frogt http://news.nptoolkit.com/priority-research-the-famous-fabio-the-frogt

Dr Richard Brown (Assistant Director for Quality: Patient Experience, Equality and Engagement – Alder Hey Children’s Hospital) generated plenty of interest as he demonstrated how Alder Hey use this groundbreaking tool, developed by Priority Research, to measure and improve patient experience for children and young people within their care. Dr Brown said "Fabio the Frog and the NPT provides quality engagement for a quality outcome”.

Not only is the NPT used to understand the needs of children, young people, parents and carers, but it allows access to other patients that have, for far too long, been deemed ‘hard to reach’. The NPT including Fabio the Frog™ and his friends can communicate with patients who have a visual impairment, complex needs, severe learning difficulties, audio impairments, can’t read or write, in fact just about everyone receiving care in the NHS.

Fabio the Frog™ was born 4 years ago at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, following the realisation that using traditional paper based patient survey’s could not accurately measure or understand the views of children and young people. Priority Research were asked to provide a solution to this problem, and by working with the children at Alder Hey they found that a farting, nose-picking frog was just the thing to get them eager to have their say. Cheeky, funny and just a little rude, in fact exactly like children themselves! Fabio hits the mark and now Alder Hey can much more effectively talk to children about improving their patient experience.

However, the NPT is not only for kids, as with or without Fabio the Frog™ it easily allows access to the views of ALL patient groups to continually improve the patient experience.

Wed, 16 Dec 2009 08:18:00 -0800 Final NPT event of 2009 held in London http://news.nptoolkit.com/final-npt-event-of-2009-held-in-london http://news.nptoolkit.com/final-npt-event-of-2009-held-in-london

The final NPT event of 2009 was held in London at the BT Showcase Suite, Newgate Street.

Martin Clark (BT) welcomed everyone and gave a quick demonstration of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) instruments used in supporting the Patient Experience.

Kim Corbett (DSSA Project Manager - South Central Strategic Health Authority) gave her view on what patient experience means to the NHS, the methods currently used to gather patient feedback and spoke about the need to proactively use the information collected to start.... “putting people at the heart of improvements”.

Liz McArthur (Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust) once again outlined the reasons behind the development of the NPT, the need for a system that gives instant feedback and that is accessible to everyone regardless of age, disability and language.

Galen Ives (Chairman – Priority Research Ltd) explained the advantages of the NPT, with emphasis on instant real time reporting and on its cost-benefits. He handed over to Richard Lindle (Project Developer - Priority Research Ltd) who gave a detailed demonstration of the NPT process; Design, Engage and Report, using the NPT web portal and the NPT Data Collection software. Galen concluded with a demonstration of a new reporting feature currently in development which automatically writes detailed text commentary to accompany the survey results reported by the instant charting function in the NPT.

Martin Clark returned to introduce the workshops, which once again helped attendees understand the challenges in obtaining patient feedback from children and young people, patients with complex needs, patients with severe learning difficulties, patients with Mental Healthcare requirements and patients who do not have English as their first language. Martin discussed the ‘real’ benefits of the NPT in helping staff deal easily with these challenges, before ending with a chance for everyone present to gain hands-on experience of using the NPT.

So that’s it for 2009. However, due to the positive response to these events we will be announcing further dates in the early part of 2010. Please keep an eye on www.nptoolkit.com for registration details once these dates are confirmed.

Mon, 07 Dec 2009 00:35:40 -0800 NPT Leeds Workshop format successful in gathering ideas http://news.nptoolkit.com/npt-leeds-workshop-format-successful-in-gathe http://news.nptoolkit.com/npt-leeds-workshop-format-successful-in-gathe

The NPT Leeds event on Thursday 3rd December gave a fascinating insight into the current methods being used by SHAs, PCTs, practitioners and other NHS networks to gather patient experience information.

Anne Bury, (Programme Manager for Patient Safety; North East Strategic Health Authority) highlighted her concerns about the current methods being used to retain patient feedback, and how these methods were failing. As a leading figure within the North East SHA, she reiterated a “duty to consult with the public” and how it would be great to have a system that would allow us to “keep abreast of patient feedback”. She understood that the young are more engaged and keyed up when it comes to using new technology, and “to get real time feedback from paediatrics is really amazing”.

Liz McArthur (Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust) recalled an age when listening to children and young people about their care was “just not heard of”.  Time, patience and communication were key in reaching the so called “difficult to reach patients”. Liz explained the reasons behind the development of the NPT, including the requirement for a system that returned “instant data” and which could also present results in a “child friendly format”.

Valda Smits (Priority Research) demonstrated the NPT process, outlining its simplicity and speed when designing a questionnaire, gathering patient feedback and reporting using the true real time results.

The event concluded with workshops discussing the various methods organisations currently use to gather patient feedback, and how the NPT could bring real improvements for both patients and clinicians. Once again feedback from the attendees was excellent; it was seen as a valuable event that offered a great introduction to the benefits of the NPT.

So, it’s off to London on the 9th of December for the last event of the 2009.  Places are still available for the event and if you would like to book yourself, or a colleague, a seat at the workshop, please follow this link:  www.BTGlobalEvents.com/events/NationalPaediatricToolkit

Thu, 26 Nov 2009 08:32:00 -0800 NPT Birmingham Workshop - a total success http://news.nptoolkit.com/npt-birmingham-workshop-a-total-success http://news.nptoolkit.com/npt-birmingham-workshop-a-total-success

Visitors to the NPT Birmingham event on Tuesday 26th November were allowed a closer look at the NPToolkit, additional services and software that can be used to measure and monitor patient experience.

  • Mark Allen (BT) opened the workshop and gave a detailed demonstration on mobile health working and talked about patient experience in the community.
  • Julia Holding (Programme Specialist Engagement & Consultation, West Midlands Strategic Health Authority) gave a informative view on where consultation and patient feedback are key within the NHS.
  • Liz McArthur (Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust) outlined how Alder Hey is using patient experience feedback to drive service improvements.
  • Valda Smits (Priority Research) demonstrated the NPT, and explained how Alder Hey’s patients were central to its development.
  • Paul Meadows (Ridgian) discussed how patient experience information can be part of wider business intelligence analysis, including graphical performance monitoring dashboards.

Open questions from the floor concluded the session, before visitors were allowed a hands-on look at the nptoolkit; creating and completing bespoke questionnaire and reporting on real-time data.

Visitors agreed that the event was useful, relevant and valuable to their organisations.

Places are still available for forthcoming events at both Leeds (3rd Dec) and London (9th Dec).  To book your place, follow this link: www.BTGlobalEvents.com/events/NationalPaediatricToolkit

Mon, 09 Nov 2009 03:13:00 -0800 National Paediatric Toolkit (Fabio the Frog) launches at the BT Tower http://news.nptoolkit.com/national-paediatric-toolkit-fabio-the-frog-la http://news.nptoolkit.com/national-paediatric-toolkit-fabio-the-frog-la

Clinicians, Medical Directors and Commissioners from all over Britain packed the presentation suite at the BT Tower, to see the unveiling of the National Paediatric Toolkit.

The event, staged by the NPT partners (Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust, Priority Research Ltd, BT and Panasonic) gave attendees the opportunity to view and trial the NPT.

The presentation outlined the key drivers behind the development of this unique, hand held survey tool.

Mark Allen (BT Client Business Manager) started proceedings, discussing BT's involvement with ‘Point of Care Information Technology’.

Valda Smits (MD - Priority Research Ltd) explained the how the three year development, with patients and families of Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital, resulted in a toolkit that easily allow users to evaluate patient related outcome measures, and gain access to ‘quality linked’ funding. Displaying the NPT process; design, engage and report, Valda concluded “...through the NPT users can design their own questionnaires, capture the experiences of their patients and report, using real-time data”.

Moya Sutton (Executive Nurse – Alder Hey Children’s Hospital) explained how Fabio the Frog animated characters, designed by children and young people, were used as part of NPT interactive questionnaires to capture the opinions of children and young people, on the oncology ward at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.  She concluded her presentation, detailing projects currently being undertaken using the NPT, that will allow the Trust to develop key action plans.

Guest of Honour, Professor Ann Keen (MP, Under Secretary for Health Services, Department of Health) spoke about the need for a patient experience mechanism that was aimed at all ages.  Impressed with Fabio the Frog and the NPT, Professor Keen said “I will do everything within my power to make sure this product is cascaded throughout the NHS”.

Guest of Honour, Dr Sheila Shribman (National Clinical Director for Children, Young People and Maternity Services) recalled her experiences as a clinician and how it was evident that we do not consult enough with children and young people when it comes to their care and experiences of health services.

Chris Woods (Panasonic) showed how the CF-H1 (the preferred mobile clinical assistant for the NPT) had been developed with the patient in mind.

Finally, the children involved with the development of the NPT, were introduced to Professor Keen who presented them all with gifts from the partners, at the top of the BT Tower.

Welcome to the NPT Blog! This is where we'll push out updates both regarding the software, events and press.

What is the National Paediatric Toolkit?

The NPT® has been developed with the patients and families of Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

It is a unique, hand held survey tool which uses animated questionnaires incorporating the character Fabio the Frog® to capture the opinions and experiences of children and young people in settings such as healthcare, education and social services - in fact, anywhere that the opinions of this traditionally hard-to-engage audience are sought.
